Unique Identification Authority – The UIA, under the aegis of the Planning Commission, is aimed at providing a unique identity to the targeted population of the Government’s flagship schemes such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Sarva Shikksha Abhiyan and Baharat Nirman. The proposed authority will be entrusted with the task of laying down plans and policies to implement the unique identification scheme across the country. Nandan Nilekani; co- chairman of Infosys Technologys has been appointed by the government to head a newly created authority that will supervise the creation of a unique identification database for the country’s citizens.
